Streaming Sounds Great But...

-Brian Duckering, Senior Director of Products and Alliances

“…we already have a deployment/management system that works fine.” “…it would be too big a change to switch from host-based deployment.” “…all of our departments/individuals buy their own software; it’s not centralized today.” and my personal favorite “…we just don’t have the resources for a project like that right now.” Read more >

Better Living Through Virtualization, But Why?

-Brad Rowland, Vice President of Marketing and Product Management, AppStream Inc.

With every new technology introduction there is an understanding curve that tracks somewhere loosely along the adoption lifecycle. Sometimes very loosely. The Virtualization Revolution is no stranger to this phenomenon of a mixed level of understanding throughout the industry. Lately we’ve seen examples surface of incorrect feature sets and value messages attributed to vendor products that occupy substantially different virtualization spaces. Easily the furthest along in the understanding curve is server virtualization. Most people understand that you’re abstracting the server hardware and this has obvious benefits, not the least of which is simply reducing the number of servers you have to manage. I Want My AppTV!

-Brad Rowland, Vice President of Marketing and Product Management

Why is it important at all? Why did acronyms like ASP become the most used phrases world-wide after Y2K? Why the near religious fervor about ‘service’ orientation? Is it just about having it now? Managing Virtualization

-Brian Duckering, Senior Director of Products and Alliances

Virtualization has once again become a very hot topic. You can hardly turn around without seeing another article on how virtualization is changing the face of IT, adding flexibility and/or reducing costs. And those that are paying attention have noticed that the concept of virtualization has grown way beyond server virtualization, a la VMware. Now there are virtual desktops and virtual applications as well. At each level, there are some fantastic and diverse value propositions that warrant at least as much hype as they are getting. However, as the popularity of these technologies grows, so is the concern about how to properly manage them. Read more >

SaaS is a Business Model

-Brian Duckering, Senior Director of Products and Alliances

The allure of the service-based software model has been around for a very long time. And in spite of all the exciting marketing hype that comes along with each promising new acronym (remember ASP?), there have always been pitfalls, barriers, costs and challenges. Software as a Service, or SaaS, is the latest approach to an old problem, and the pattern holds true again. After all, if there are such great benefits to offering your software as a service, why isn’t everyone doing it? Read more >
