Q. Why is Symantec acquiring AppStream?
A. AppStream has had a partnership with Symantec since 2006 that has enabled the two teams to get to know each other very well. What made an acquisition by Symantec so attractive was the opportunity for Symantec to integrate AppStream’s streaming capabilities throughout Symantec’s product offerings for endpoint security, network, and messaging security.
The combination of AppStream’s streaming technology with Symantec’s endpoint and application virtualization solutions will give customers another way to effectively manage their endpoints by offering on-demand service of data and applications to endpoints, helping them save money in IT administration and licensing costs. For example, customers using Symantec’s SVS Pro product with AppStream’s streaming technology can provide instant and reliable self-provisioning of occasionally used applications, helping customers lower both their license and support costs for those applications in the enterprise.
Over time as endpoints evolve to incorporate a range of application delivery approaches — local, streamed, within virtual desktops, etc. — Symantec strategy is to provide solutions that support and manage this complexity. AppStream’s technology is an important part of this overall strategy.

A. Symantec’s vision is to enable truly dynamic endpoints — applications and data delivered to any endpoint in a seamless, painless manner. Our belief is that customers should be able to have a gradual migration path from today’s costly and complex endpoints to a future with similar choices but less complexity, and with greater portability of applications and user data across endpoints.
As such, Symantec plans to offer a full set of solutions to accommodate virtualization of applications and desktops, and to radically improve the delivery and management of software to any endpoint. With SVS and AppStream we have the core elements of this vision in place, but we will continue to add to this portfolio to deliver the complete vision.
Q. How does the AppStream acquisition fit into Symantec’s endpoint virtualization strategy?
A. Application streaming and virtualization have become married technologies in the industry. The combination provides a more efficient way for applications to be consumed at the endpoint and to help IT reduce the cost and complexity of traditional software management.
Q. What is application streaming?
A. Application streaming is simply a way to move data from the network to the endpoint more efficiently. Only specific parts of a computer application need to be available on-demand for the end user to perform a particular function. This means that an application need not be fully installed on a client computer, but parts of it can be delivered over a low bandwidth network as and when they are required.
Application streaming is usually combined with application virtualization, so that applications are not installed in the traditional sense but provide the same features and functionality as if conventionally installed. This allows conventional applications to be viewed and used as a service without any modification to the underlying application.

A. AppStream’s streaming provides an on-demand delivery platform for SVS software. Integration between AppStream and SVS technologies provides the latest method to track, monitor and restrict applications from a central location.
