AppStream Enables Ranken Technical College to Cut Software Costs with Licensing Management and Desktop Streaming Solutions

Palo Alto, Calif. September 25, 2006 – AppStream, Inc., a leader in on-demand application deployment and management, today announced that Ranken Technical College in St. Louis, Missouri, has deployed AppStream’s Software Licensing Management and Desktop Streaming solutions. Ranken uses AppStream technology to control the distribution of Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, AutoDesk and AutoCAD to students throughout the college, and to manage software licensing.

Ranken allows students to access desktop software via the AppStream portal. Students can install software that is set to expire on a specified date, ensuring that licensing remains under Ranken’s control. AppStream software licensing management enables Ranken to save on IT costs and resources by centralizing and automating the administration of software licenses, minimizing waste of technical resources, managing software license compliance and automatically eliminating applications from the end user’s PC upon license expiration.

AppStream keeps software licensing expenses down by allowing remote desktop streaming of applications as an alternative to installing desktop software on each PC.  This “virtual” method of provisioning and managing software removes the need for IT staff to physically install the required software on their students’ laptops.  Now, Ranken’s IT team can spend their time on more strategic IT projects and authorized Ranken students can enjoy the added advantage of 24/7 access to software from any remote location.  AppStream also empowers Ranken to track usage of software, so that the school pays licensing fees for actual software deployed and used.

Prior to AppStream, Ranken provided a shared drive for students to download and install software, but this did not provide an adequate level of control over access and licensing.

“Before deploying AppStream, Ranken had no way to truly manage software licensing or control application access,” said Derek L. Babcock, director of information services at Ranken. “This challenge was costing us a lot of money, and solving the problem was a top priority. AppStream is the only solution we found that offers complete control over software licensing and distribution.”

“AppStream is proud that a technical college like Ranken, offering degrees in information technology, has selected our cutting-edge software distribution and management system to benefit students and staff, while saving the college money,” said Brad Rowland, vice president of marketing, AppStream.  “Access to software has become a critical component of higher education, but distributing software to students can be a challenging and costly task. AppStream not only delivers cost-effective software licensing management, but also a desktop streaming solution allowing students and faculty to access critical applications remotely, anytime and anywhere.”
