Palo Alto, Calif. December 11, 2006 -AppStream, Inc., a leader in on-demand application deployment and management, today announced that Cleveland Municipal School District has implemented 12,000 seats of AppStream’s award-winning software distribution system, providing 57,000 students “self-serve” access to PC software applications.
AppStream allows Windows applications to be distributed or “streamed” to a student’s PC upon their request where the application executes locally just as if it were installed conventionally. This technique known as application streaming, delivers application bits on demand, and ensures the application behaves as if it were installed using conventional methods (i.e.: installing a CD ROM).
As one of the 50 largest K-12 school districts in the United States, Cleveland Municipal School District was faced with the challenge of distributing and managing Windows software applications to support 57,000 students using 12,000 desktops, located in 111 buildings throughout Cleveland. Not only was installing new applications and upgrading existing ones time consuming for IT staff, but their existing model was not scalable and would not support their end goal of creating a 1:1 computer to student ratio. After months of evaluating various technology solutions, Cleveland Municipal School District chose AppStream for its ability to:
Provide students with “self-serve” access to Windows-compatible applications;
Build a scalable infrastructure to service all currently enrolled students and future growth;
Reduce IT costs and free up IT resources for other education critical projects;
Install and use AppStream technology quickly (days vs. weeks or months).
“At Cleveland, we are committed to improving the quality of education through the use of innovative new technologies,” said Thomas Bender, chief information officer, of the Cleveland Municipal School District. “We are making great progress towards the goal of every student having information and application access; on campus and remotely. Creating an affordable and scalable infrastructure for desktop and license management allows our staff to focus on other new technology programs geared toward preparing students for the best possible future in their education.”
“On-demand application delivery coupled with license provisioning and enforcement ensures the right application at the right time for student education while making the best use of public funds,” said Brad Rowland, vice president of worldwide marketing and product management, AppStream. “The use of technology in education has been shown to improve student test scores as well as overall educational experience. We are committed to delivering industry leading technology and supporting innovative customers like Cleveland who are pushing ahead to solve real issues today, with compelling solutions for affordable and reliable application delivery.”
